Amber Herkey grew up in southern California in the city of Tujunga and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2010. She has always been drawn to international issues and is deeply concerned with addressing youth violence. While at the university, she explored those interests through her studies in Anthropology and Peace Studies.
She graduated a semester early and immediately took several positions working for the university and in the South Bend community. She redirected her passion for international issues to focus on transforming domestic realities by working in education and youth development. She became a Teach For America corps member in 2011 and taught social justice at a KIPP school in North Carolina. She returned to the South Bend community as the Director of Urban Youth Services for the Michiana Family YMCA in July 2012 and is honored to be a member of the Reading for Life Inc. Board.
